Regulation 2022/1176 of 7 July 2022, amends Annex VI (authorized UV filters) to Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. It provides for new concentration limits for Benzophenone-3 and Octocrylene, to be respected from 28 January 2023.

For Benzophenone-3 (CAS number: 131-57-7)

Conditions

  • Product type, body parts
  1. a) Face products, hand products, and lip products, excluding propellant and pump spray products
  2. b) Body products, including propellant and pump spray products
  3. c) Other products
  • Maximum concentration in ready use preparation
  1. a) 6%
  2. b) 2.2%
  3. c) 0.5%

Other

For a) and b) Not more than 0.5% to protect product formulation.

  1. a) If used at 0.5% to protect product formulation, the levels used as UV filter must not exceed 5.5%.
  2. b) If the substance is used at 0.5% to protect the product formulation, the contents of this substance as an ultraviolet filter must not exceed 1.7%.

**Not required if concentration is 0,5 % or less and when it is used only for product protection purposes.

 

Octocrylene (CAS number: 6197-30-4)

***Benzophenone as an impurity and/or degradation product of Octocrylene shall be kept at trace level.
